Nate turned 1 year old last Saturday and we went up to NY so that Grandma and Grandpa Kim could celebrate Nate's "dohl" (1 year old in Korean) with him. Traditionally, the most celebrated birthdays for Koreans are 100 days, 1st birthday and then the 60th so it was a big deal for them to be with Nate. Of course, my parents are always excited to see Nate whatever the occasion. My mom cooked all day to prepare an awesome Korean feast for dinner. Nate even got his first taste of seaweed soup (traditional birthday soup) and rice and he loved it! Thanks so much Mom and Dad! We're grateful for all that you did to bless Nate on his 1st birthday!
My uncle's family were so generous and gave Nate a traditional Korean "dohl bok" outfit to wear as well. Brandon wasn't sure about the pink pants at first and we had to reassure him that it was indeed a boys' outfit and explain to him that Koreans dressed their kids in bright colors on purpose for such an occasion to ward off bad spirits. However, once Nate was dressed, we all thought that Nate looked absolutely adorable and even Brandon didn't seem to mind the pants so much.
We also had Nate play a traditional game called "dohl-ja-bee" where you place various items on the table for the baby to choose. The items that the baby picks up was said to be an indicator of the child’s future. We placed thread, rice, book, pens/pencils, and money and Nate went straight for the pen, which supposedly means that he will grow up to be a scholar. Of course we don't believe in such superstition but it was fun to watch him go after it nevertheless. Well, we have tons of pictures from the trip, as well as pictures during Grandma Averill's visit, but here are some from the birthday party for you to enjoy. More to come later!
