We are LONG overdo for an update about the little guy! Well, I actually started drafting this post in late November. Yikes!!! But better late than never, right? =) It's been rather busy with the holidays and my new part-time job that I started in December. I've been going to work about 2-3 days a week and it's been an adjustment for all of us. Before making the final decision to pursue the job, we prayed for good childcare options for Nate and God definitely answered that prayer and provided a good friend, Amy Buchanan, to help us. Even though I miss the little guy very much, it's been a blessing to know that Nate's being well cared for and are hopefully learning to play and interact with other kiddos as well. Thanks so much Amy!
Well, there are so many things to write about but here are some highlights. First, Nate is walking very well now and he's actually trying to run more than walk these days. He is one busy kid and he seems to enjoy the mobility and rarely sits still in one spot for very long. Another advantage to him walking is that we get to be greeted at the door. We absolutely love it that when one of us comes home after being away for a while, he runs to the door yelling "mama" or "dada" and greets us with a hug and a smile. It's the best kind of greeting there is! He also hates to see Brandon leave for work but always sends him off with a sweet "bye bye."
He's also figured out how to climb down the stairs but not well enough for mommy and daddy to feel comfortable letting him go on his own just yet. He also loves to imitate things we do, act silly to make us laugh, play chase, play hide-and-seek or peekaboo, throw the ball, tickle saying "ticka ticka" and get tickled.
Nate's improving well with his communication skills as well. He's been signing "all done" and "thank you", although "thank you" gets confused with blowing kisses at times and he signs only when he wants to. Other times, he resorts to head nods or shakes, pointing, or talking. He is a master at pointing at things and making "uh gu" sounds when he wants something and he also loves to point outside when he hears the airplane or train, or dogs barking outside. Some new words and sounds that Nate has learned to say recently are:
"oh oh oh" = imitating a dog's bark
mama or umma = mama
moe/boe = more
buh buh = bubbles
bah bah = bye bye
nigh nigh = night night
puh per = diaper
yam yam = food
ticka ticka = tickle tickle
ba baw = balloon
na na or be na na = banana (love to eat bananas and point them out in the store)
fuball = football
bawball = basketball
oh oh! = uh oh!
bah = bath
duck
down
wow
and of course, no!
Nate also loves to hum along when we sing and he loves to dance. He loves Chris Tomlin songs and the song "Jesus Came to Earth" from the SGM's Children's CD Amazing God. He raises both arms up in the air to the word "Praise" and has learned to put his hands together to pray for meals and bedtime to the words "Jesus" or "let's pray". We just pray and look forward to the day when Nate does these things out of true love for Jesus.
As far as acid reflux is concerned, we got the doctor's okay at Nate's 12 month checkup to start weaning him off the acid reflux medication. Nate has been completely off the medication since about 13 months and we haven't seen any negative effects as a result, which is a huge praise. Speaking of 12 months, here are his 12 month stats:
12 months (Date 11/16/2010)
Weight measurement: 20 lbs 11 oz
Weight percentile: 10-25%
Height measurement: 30 1/2 inches
Height percentile: 75%
Head circumference: 47 cm
Head circumference percentile: 50-75%
Speaking of weaning, Nate has been officially weaned from nursing as well since late December We dropped a feeding a week and he's done quite well transitioning to regular milk. So after 13 months, another season has come to an end. Nate is not a very cuddly baby and nursing had been a nice excuse for me to hold him. I definitely miss my special times with the little guy. Sigh! But I've definitely been enjoying learning to have fun and interactive with him in other special ways.
As far as sleep is concerned, Nate sleeps about 12 hours at night but has been going back and forth between one and two naps during the day since mid-December. We're looking forward to when this transition phase comes to an end! Another big update is that Nate finally has some teeth now! Nate's first tooth broke through the last week in November and got his next three at a rate of one about every week or week and a half. He's done remarkably well and hasn't shown much teething pains. He now has four showing but I'm sure there will be more to come very soon. No more toothless smiles!
We also had a wonderful holiday. Mom and Dad Kim visited us the week before Christmas, which was a nice treat. Nate came down with a virus and got his first fever on Christmas eve so we had a very low key Christmas weekend here at home taking care of the little guy. The following week, we flew down to Charlotte to visit with the Averill family for New Year's and had a very relaxing time there as well. Nate did great on the plane. He was a wriggle-worm as expected but didn't scream or cry and didn't seem bothered by ear pains, which was a praise. He seemed to enjoyed looking out the window and waving at people around us, even though some of them were sleeping.
Lastly, Nate's curls were back but just long enough for mommy to enjoy them because dada was soon wanting to give the little guy a hair cut. So we gave him his 3rd haircut mid-January and cut of several inches but he has so much hair that it doesn't even seem like he's gotten a haircut at all (the pictures below were taken before the haircut). I just love those curls!!!
Well, that's all for the updates for now!
